Fall splendor got off to an early start this year, with splotches of yellow dappling the River Valley as early as Labour Day weekend. A quick start likely means an early exit, so it’s best to take advantage of the colours while they last.

So, instead of watching the leaves fall from the branches outside your office window, get outside and see the beauty for yourself. Here are the 5 best viewing points in the city, in our opinion

Victoria Park hill

Near Le Marchand Mansion (11523 100th Ave.), and down the hill you can see the river valley for miles. Look down and all you can see are reds, oranges, and yellows with a view of the river meandering down the middle.

Kinnaird Ravine

Drive east on Jasper Avenue to 82 Street and turn east on 111 Avenue, you will find this lovely trail that will lead you through a heavily forested, narrow, and deep ravine and is one of the most beautiful walks in the city. Walkers have to negotiate a steep hill on the way down, and because it is so isolated it is best undertaken with a buddy. But don’t let these challenges deter you from undertaking this delightful walk. It’s easy to imagine you aren’t in the city at all.

Whitemud Ravine

The main train is located in the north part of the Whitemud Ravine situated between Fox Drive and Whitemud Drive. Hiking in this north section of the Whitemud Ravine Nature Reserve is a wonderful wilderness experience. The trail crosses Whitemud Creek three times and winds through a mix of huge balsam poplars, spruce, and various shrubs. The Whitemud Ravine Nature Reserve has the highest biodiversity of plants and animals in the city. Enjoy the informative signs.

Fort Edmonton

Well... not really Fort Edmonton. You want to go behind. A little hidden gem that a lot of people don’t know. Right behind Fort Edmonton, there’s a trail that goes all the way around, and if you take it and cross the bridge, you can walk up and it’s gorgeous! Amazing view of the city foliage. Bring a camera

Mill Creek

Just about the entire trail is stunning, however right next to the Old Timers Cabin (9430 Scona Road) until right about 72nd Avenue, is a canopy of trees – it’s like you’re in a tunnel – and it’s absolutely breathtaking.

Hat’s off to the committee who, 100 years ago, decided to keep our River Valley pristine. It’s hard to decide which view is the best, so go check out our favorite viewing locations and let us know yours.
