The Canada Greener Homes Initiative provides grants and a loan for home evaluations and for retrofits. The eligible retrofits include home insulation, windows and doors, air sealing, and mechanical and renewable energy systems.

It is important that you read all the eligibility criteria and initiative requirements to be sure that you will qualify for the grants and/or the loan at the end of the process. You must undertake both a pre-and post-retrofit EnerGuide evaluation to be eligible.

As part of the initiative, you have access to:

Grants from $125 to $5,000

To get a part of your costs back for eligible home retrofits

Up to $600

As a maximum contribution toward the total costs of your pre- and post-retrofit EnerGuide evaluations

Interest-free loans of up to $40,000, with a repayment term of 10 years to help you undertake major home retrofits

If you are eligible for the Canada Greener Homes Initiative, you must:

 1) Apply and wait for your application to be approved by Natural Resources Canada (NRCan)

2) complete a pre-and post-retrofit EnerGuide evaluation

3) Complete at least one eligible retrofit recommended by your energy advisor in their Renovation Upgrade Report. Retrofits completed without having a pre-retrofit EnerGuide evaluation completed first are not eligible for the grant.

4) Purchase equipment and products from NRCan’s approved products list if you are replacing windows and heating equipment

5) Ensure installations are done by a licensed professional, if applicable*

6) Purchase all products in Canada. Online purchases are eligible only if ordered from an online distributor in Canada.

7) Keep copies of all your documents until March 31, 2028

* A licensed professional must install all mechanical systems except thermostats. Mechanical systems include ground source heat pumps, air source heat pumps, cold climate air source heat pumps, heat pump water heaters, furnaces (eligible for northern and off-grid community residents only), and boilers (eligible for northern and off-grid community residents only).
